*snow day* ~ cary child photographer

February 13, 2014 · 10 Comments

I love skiing, it’s my favorite sport {and one of the few I’m better at than my husband, but who’s counting?}. Many of my most cherished childhood memories are of skiing with my parents and my two sisters. And, like many people who grew  up in New England, I spent countless winter days when I wasn’t skiing, outside building snowmen, having snowball fights, coming in to sit by the fire and drink hot chocolate and rejoicing in getting the day off from school. I couldn’t imagine a school year without snow days.

When I moved to North Carolina a year ago, I said goodbye to one of the most memorable parts of my childhood: snow.  It was hard to imagine my kids growing up and not having that…

And then something remarkable happened. Yes it snowed…in Raleigh…and in the midst of the winter storm,  just as I was about to get the girls ready to go outside and play, my lovely daughter, Molly, decided it was time for her arrival into the world…a month early. For all of you who’ve never had to worry about getting caught in a blizzard while in labor, let me just say, yes, being in active labor while your husband is driving 35 mph, on ice, and can’t see the road is pretty intense. In the end, Molly’s birth was incredible and I forgot all about the snow…until…two weeks later…

It snowed. Again! I not only got to stay warm and snuggle my new Molly Kate this time, I also got to take Lily and Nora out to play. It doesn’t get any better than that!

I love these photos, not only because it documents a rarity in my girls’ lives, but I captured them enjoying something that meant the world to me when I was their age; a little piece of me that I could share with them.

I also popped over to a friend’s house across the street to snap this sweet picture of their baby boy, Preston, experiencing snow for the first time. Isn’t he sweet? He did not know what to make of it all…”do I eat it? can I crawl on it? where’s mommy? wait…this stuff is cold…ok, seriously, where’s mommy?”

It felt great to get back behind the lens and I am looking forward to booking spring sessions.
But for now, time to go back and get more baby Molly snuggles…

XO

Just perfect! I love the older, wiser Lily soaking it all up and sweet little Nora still getting a handle on what is happening. You captured these moments beautifully! xoxo
