what to wear for family photos~ cary family photographer

February 10, 2015 · 10 Comments

Ninety-nine percent of my clients ask what to wear for family photos. I love this question. I love it so much that I create blog posts and pinterest boards answering it.

What I recommend for all of my subjects:

– Comfort is key. Dress in simple, comfortable clothing and shoes (or go barefoot!) and style your hair and makeup naturally
– Stay away from logos, characters or writing on your clothing. Stick with solids and patterns.
– Kids feel most comfortable when not stuffed into formal, unfamiliar clothes and shoes.
– For siblings and families, it is best not to match. Instead, try to coordinate colors or patterns for everyone so that it doesn’t look staged or formal.
– Cool patterns, layers (think sweaters/cardigans/vests/jackets), accessories (scarves/jewelry/hats), textures (ruffles, chunky knits) and/or any personal items (blankets/favorite toy) will add a *pop* to your images
– Go with a neutral and muted color palette for clean and soft images

Because visual examples are the best way to get outfit inspiration, I create a “what to wear” blog post twice a year and I feature clothes {a lot from the gap and jcrew} that are currently in the stores. I’ve gotten a great response {1,000+ repins!}. Although the ensembles I create are meant more for inspiration, there are links to each piece in case you want to know where to buy them. My sister loved my fall what to wear ensemble so much that she decided to put it to the test and purchase the majority of the set for her family session. How cool is that!?!

You made a good decision to make this post. It should easy some of the family’s tension. They are already uneasy about posing. Great idea.
